Professional Experience

Principal, Charles Simon Architect + Planner. Charles Simon has been a practicing architect and planner in Canada since 1967. He is the only practicing architect/planner to have been granted an honorary membership in the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects. In 1970 he founded a private practice.

He has been widely recognized for his work in energy efficient building, environmentally sensitive site planning and resource efficient planning. Various organizations in Canada, the United States, England, Germany, former Yugoslavia and Hungary have asked him to speak about architectural and planning solutions in these areas. He has extensive university teaching experience in three countries in the fields of landscape architecture, architecture and town planning.

His inter-disciplinary training and experience have led to a range of community and urban design projects. These include master plans for new towns, universities, resorts, residential communities and rural villages. Urban design work ranges from design guidelines to complex infill projects and re-zoning applications.

The design of housing environments remains an abiding interest, whether large or small, high or low budget, new construction or renovation. This interest extends beyond the building process to residents’ responses after the buildings are built.

His work has been featured in a variety of publications in Canada, the United States, Japan, Switzerland, England, The Netherlands, Poland and Belgium. He has won numerous design awards, including several prestigious awards for the pioneering Environmental Learning Centre for the Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA and most recently a Lifetime Achievement Award for Sustainable Building from the Green Building Festival, Toronto 2006. And alongside the practice of architecture and planning, he has maintained an interest in research projects and the publication of papers and articles.
